Wood Bounce Back to Winning Ways
Date : March 5th 2009
Fixture : League Game - Home
Result : Harold Wood 2 - 0 Canning Town
Wood playing their first of three league games in six days travelled too Canning Town for what was their own home game. Town were on an awful run of eight league losses in a row.
The game was even for the first 10 minutes with Town forcing a couple of corners which sadly did not materialise too anything. This was just the start though as Wood then began too get into the game more and take a firm grip on the match. The work rate and closing down of every Wood outfield player was immense, which meant Canning Town had no time too settle on the ball, allowing Wood’s ability too shine through. With Wood looking dangerous in every attack and making full use of the wide pitch, it wasn't long before the first goal of the game came, once again from Lee Wettner, a floated free kick from the right by Hughes was volleyed in at the the far post by Lee Wettner who grabbed his second goal in two games. A richly deserved opening goal for Wood, with Wettner once again proving what a menace he can be in the opponents box from dead balls.
A brilliant save from the Canning Town keeper kept them in the game when, a Ziepe corner found Stone at the near post, who’s half volley was somehow parried too safety by the keeper, although a second goal was more than Wood deserved and they did not have too wait long for it. A free flowing counter attack by Wood, with Ziepe advancing into the final third before slotting the ball into the feet of Gallen who calmly dispatched the ball over the advancing keeper and into the back of the net. The referee blew for half time and the Wood team came off the pitch happy with their first half performance. They had totally dominated the game for 45 mins, not only was the football of an excellent high tempo but the work rate and the attitude of the players was spot on.
The Canning Town management must have been frank with his team as they came out all guns blazing, although the Wood defence and the keeper were able to keep Canning Town at bay. Even a well worked free kick from Canning Town could only produce what can be described as a “world class” save from Bonner, he managed too deflect the ball wide from six yards out keeping Wood’s clean sheet in tact.
Wood began too get into the game again and the Gallen spurred on by his first half goal trying attempts from his own half! Rafis then saw his volley somehow cleared off the line by the backtracking Town sub! By now the game was wrapped up, the introduction of subs Portway, Miller and Fyffe saw the best opportunities too really put the game too bed. Firstly Fyffe was unlucky with is header from outside of the box which just went over the bar. Miller was then put through by a quick Todd free kick but his shot drifted just wide of the post.
Team Lineup : Bonner; Church, Wettner, Klien, Todd; Stone*, Ayres, Ziepe, Rafis*, Hughes; Gallen*,
Subs:Fyffe, Miller, Portway
